In 1886, the city now known as Town and Country, Missouri, was then known as Altheim. Altheim, located between what is now Woods Mill to the west and Interstate 270 to the east, was a farming town along Clayton Road. There was a one-room schoolhouse to the south of Altheim, on Mason Road, and to the north, the first post office sat on Conway Road. The original post office was a log cabin that today can be seen at Drace Park where it was reconstructed. To avoid annexation, the residents of the community decided to incorporate in 1950 as the Village of Town and Country. At the time, it comprised two square miles and had one hundred and sixty-two residents. Its boundaries were extended twice in 1951, growing the community to four square miles and moving the geographic center to the west. Then in 1977, the community grew again with an annexation that doubled its size and made its population roughly five thousand. Other annexations followed, the most recent in 1992, and added the fourth ward to the city.
